Valentine's Day Saturday, February 19, 2005

For Valentine's Day we had heart shaped waffles with red syrup on top.

Reid and I enjoyed a fancy dinner after all the kids went down for an early bedtime. We had steak with onions and mushrooms, asparagus, roasted potatoes, shrimp cocktail, bread dipped in olive oil and balsamic, and raspberry sorbet for dessert.

Earlier that day Reid sent me to the spa for a massage while he watched the kids.

Beauty Queen

Amanda went to a beauty pagent today and won 1st prize in her age group! There were 2 other girls in the 3-4 year old group. Amanda got up on stage and spun around.

She won a huge trophy, a sash that says Queen, and a crown to go on her head. She can now go to the tri-state competition. Dallin has now decided that he wants to do something were they give you a trophy. He is very happy that Amanda is going to let him keep the trophy in his room for one night.

Emily is Growing up

Emily is now 5 1/2 months old. She is still a very calm baby, but she isn't very good at napping, which has been making her harder to handle.

She loves her baby video, binky, Dallin, Amanda, and to be in the car. She also loves to go shopping.

She just started eating solids a week ago.

When she eats, so doesn't really seem to enjoy it. She just eats because she can.

All Grown up!

Outdoor Fun

We have done a lot together these last couple months. Reid has been on easy rotations which makes family time, all the time.

Recently we went sledding at Sugarhouse park (one minute away from our house). Dallin loved it the most. We even had all 4 of us on it at once.

Emily came out of the car at the end for a run or two down the hill.

We also made snow candles one night. Then we had FHE inside while watching the candles glow.

We are glad that the kids are having fun in the snow this year.

Indoor Fun

We have also enjoyed the inside of our home together. Reid has been doing a lot of reading, and I have been watching a lot of TV.

We put together an activity box for the kids (thank you dollar store!). Each day they get to pick one activity out of the box. Today they picked flying kites. We also feed the ducks while we were at the park. Dallin won't feed the ducks because he is scared of the geese.

Amanda's favorite thing to do is computer games. She is a big video game person. She must take after her big brother. Dallin has been playing a lot of Pac Man World 2 on the Xbox. He became so in to the game that we had to finally say that he couldn't play in the morning before school (one night he woke up 3 times asking if he could play because he thought it was morning).

Movie night is big in our house. We buy junk food and rent a movie that the kids would like. We get all the blankets and pillows and spread out on the floor. The kids love it! I think it will be an on going tradition.

The Roofer Tuesday, February 8, 2005

Our 49 year old roof has been leaking for the past couple of years. We couldn't bring ourselves to pay the 7 or 8 grand needed for a new roof, so we just kept having it patched. But when it leaked so much that our bedroom ceiling collapsed, we knew we needed a new one.

After a little research, we discovered that roofing isn't rocket science. In fact, it might even be kind of fun, so we decided to try and save a fortune by putting a new one on ourselves. A bunch of friends came over one saturday and we started to tear off the old tar & gravel roof. Jeremy showed up before long and turned out to be an expert demolition man -- the old roof was off in one day. I ordered a special 'peel and stick' flat roof product that was supposed to make the installation a lot easier (and cleaner) than the old tar & gravel. I thought, "This should be done in no time... one, maybe two days tops."

Even with the help of friends & family (Jamie hammered a few hundred nails), the project took all week. And just as we were getting ready to do the peeling and sticking (which needs 45 degree weather and sunshine), a thick fog showed up and lasted a week. We had to improvise and get out a blow torch to take the place of sunshine. So that's the story... We now have a sore back, a lot of garbage to get rid of, and a nice new roof with several inches of snow on it and still no leaks.
