bistro 412
we ditched the kids and went out to dinner with some friends last night. We decided to try Bistro 412, a relatively casual french restaurant on main street. The prices were quite reasonable for park city, including a $30-35 4-course prix fixe menu. We got off to a good start with the baked brie, carmelized pears and walnuts, and a mixed greens:
The tangerine 'french soda' you see in the background was very good.
Lisa had the roasted pepper tomato soup, but we didn't even come close to finishing it. It was a little too spicy, detracting from the flavor.
I had a caesar salad, with pretty much a full head of romaine, fresh dressing, and an anchovy on top. It was good until Lisa discovered a hair in it. I'll spare you the picture.
The only positive about the hair in my salad was that I got to try this amazing 3-onion soup, with melted gruyere and baguette on top.
The 'duck 2 ways' was actually not good at all
I should have known that it wouldn't be anything special if they call it 'duck 2 ways' instead of boasting about the ways they actually cooked the bird. When I asked, they said 'it's duck cooked in its fat'.
Lisa's black cod glazed with miso sauce sounded good, but it was overdone and, despite the exotic name, the sauce wasn't too exciting.
Even though we were stuffed, we couldn't resist trying their famous pommes frites along the way
We debated between their well known bread pudding, creme brulee and lava cake. We were happy with our choice...
flourless cake, dark, not too sweet, gooey in the middle.....
meanwhile, the kids kept the babysitter busy back at home

saturday is a Sunday, May 18, 2008
it was over 70 degrees at our house yesterday, so we took advantage of it.
the first order of business was to clean out the garage:
we bought some heavy duty costco metal shelving and got rid of some junk
the girls cheered us on while eating popsicles
and then dallin and amanda made a parking lot for their bikes. they even wrote 'casey' on the wall next to where he sleeps
lunch (oprah's turkey burgers) on the deck
like the white backdrop?
after lunch it was time for dallin's first fast pitch little league game. even though he's a lefty, we figured out this past week that he can throw and bat better right-handed... so we got him a glove for the other hand and voila- he's right handed now (at least for baseball and golf...).. he still plays tennis with his left.
he struck out the first time up to bat (you only get 2 strikes in this league), and then the next time he walked
the little boy after him got hit in the helmet with a pitch....
after the game, we had an indiana jones party... raiders of the lost ark
emily decided against watching snakes and hearts get ripped out. she's a computer game addict these days
then it was time to head to provo for the double bday party: tooper and caylor
jenny throws a mean party:
sylie brought her pink purse and stayed in her statue of liberty pose the entire time (holding her arm high in the air so the purse stays snuggly in place on the shoulder)
then on our way home we cruised over to eagle mountain to get out the infamous and supercute Jeremiah Jaar
and here's a family pic that amanda drew for her sunday church talk... it was about families and she mentioned that she has 26 cousins!

the derby of all derbies
the minute you walk into the church gym, you know that this ward doesn't mess around when it comes to pinewood derbies.
the man guarding the track is in the bishopric. He unveiled his masterpiece pinewood derby car that he spent over 25 hours handcrafting a few years ago. He doesn't even have a son.
the man at the computer is our elders quorum president. he and the man at his right took on the important task of weighing in the cars (one speedy but 5.1 oz car was promptly disqualified), guarding them during the race, and tracking results to the millisecond. Don't even think about trying to add a little more graphite to the wheels after the weigh-in.
This year was our first attempt at a car, and it wasn't pretty.
But at least we came in 2nd (out of 3) in one heat.
Don't cry boys. there's always next year...
