Ever since our trip to italy, we've been on a quest lately to find the best pizza in utah, and although there are still a few to try, I think we know who the winner is going to be:
Pizzeria 712 (in provo of all places)
It has received a lot of attention here.. check out these utah blogs that rave about it:
Hilary Weeks the singer (although she doesn't know how to spell pizzeria)
Some other Robison family ('Robison Family Ramblings')
etc etc
etc etc
etc
I first heard about it from Jamie, who said they use fresh ingredients and the staff eats a meal together before starting a shift (like that Catherine Zeta-Jones movie).... And Jamie knows pizza restaurants.
The pizza was amazing. The best we've had since italy.. and it it even beats some of the stuff we had over there. Crisp dough but soft on the inside, cooked to perfection in the wood oven, with a tasty sauce and quality cheese. I took some pictures but they are no where to be found. So I stole the ones above from the restaurants website. It's a small but charming little place, with great service, good prices, and a good but simple menu. (we loved the butterleaf salad with creamy blue cheese dressing..)
There's a place in Jeremy Ranch that we tried the other night. Such an inviting atmosphere, with patio dining, live music, a little park right next to it for the kids to run around in while waiting...
The pizza was good, not great. It might be worth another trip, BUT... the service was just terrible.
By the way.. Check out Emily's poor nose. 
That morning she wanted to go exploring up to the old run down 'tree house' in our back yard/forest. She started freaking out when a bug was on her face, and started crying. Emily hates bugs. "A BUG A BUG A BUG!!!". So Dallin, being a nice big brother, picked her up and started to carry her down the hill back home to her mommy. Unfortunately they both took a wipe out on the final stretch where there is a rock retaining wall. Emily did a face plant and her lip was bleeding all over. Dallin started freaking out too at this point, and when they reached lisa she couldn't understand them... "A what was on her face???", thinking maybe she had been bitten by a squirrel in the face or something... sad
Others pizzeria's worth mentioning:
Connie's - Chicago style pizza in utah. They used to be very close to our Preston street house, but then moved all the way to 60th south. Deep dish is good stuff, but i still prefer the italy/new york style.
The Pie - A hole-in-the-wall by the University with character... and an addicting dense doughy crust. They just pile on the toppings the the pizzas weigh a ton.
Stoneground is ok
Wasatch pizza is pretty fun because of their creative toppings/combinations. Jer loved the widowmaker meat pizza.
Others we still need to try before deciding on our true utah favorite:
Settebello - This one may give pizzeria 712 a run for its money (the only Utah pizzeria that is a certified member of the Vera Pizza Napoletana, an international-standards association dedicated to preserving the "identity and integrity" of Naples-style pizza.)
Este Pizza - New york style (yum). They place in sugarhouse burnt down, then finally reopened a few months ago.
Rusted Sun pizza on State St. next to OC Tanner and Curry in a Hurry. Don't know much about it.. but i've been wanting to check it out.
Sweet Home Chicago pizza in Draper - we'd try it if it weren't all the way in draper.

we went downtown this morning to check out the big pioneer day parade.
I was worried that it might be a hot sticky crowded long experience like the good old 4th of july in provo parades... but it was actually quite nice. We parked at lisa's parents downtown, walked a few blocks through by temple square
and sat down on the curb.. wasn't really crowded at all.
Even nicer was the dip in the pool right after. 
It was 80 degrees outside when we got to the parade around 10am, but it hit 100 degrees when we left salt lake in the afternoon.... and 90 degrees at our house.

Anyway, I read about an experiment today that was interesting. 72 mice were divided into 3 groups: one group that listened to classical music (mozart to be exact), one group that listened to rock 'n roll, and one group that didn't listen to any music. Before starting, the mice went through a maze and did it in 10 minutes. A month of music listening later, the mozart group did the maze in 1.5 minutes, the no music group did the maze in 5 minutes (due to practice effects), and the rock 'n roll group took 30 minutes to get through the maze... and then they started eating eachother.

this morning after arriving home from camping, we got straight to work laying sod
the kids liked being nearby, even if they couldn't lift the heavy pieces
dallin brought out a clock and a gameboy and said 'I'm going to do my screen time outside', and then plopped himself down on a pile of sod.
they couldnt' resist and even put their swimsuits on and ran through the sprinkler

camping
Last night, we left home around 5pm for a quick one-night camping trip in the nearby Uintah mountains. We didn't know exactly where we'd end up, so we just followed the signs from Kamas to Mirror Lake, hoping to find something close by. Just about 20-25 minutes from home we found a nice little campground (called 'yellow pine creek' i think?)

and then had some turkey dogs as an appetizer while the foil dinners cooked
Pay particular attention to the tablecloth. No, it's not someone's birthday party. Lisa just loves hello kitty accesories.
here's the main course:
emily is our picky eater, so she got chicken nuggets in her foil dinner
don't forget the smores for dessert
amanda's roasting stick can reach all the way from her chair
ever roasted a strawberry marshmallow? amanda has.
'roughing it' for us involves a nice queen aerobed, blown up by a power inverter in the car, then squished into our tent.
the kids were a wee bit jealous
but they were still happy after we kicked them out onto the floor
emily loved just hanging out in the tent
the elevation was much like our house (~7200 ft), so it got down into the 50's at night. So we got up pretty early were quite chilly in the morning
nothing a little hot cocoa couldn't fix
Funny things kids say
Thursday the kids and I were shopping at Target. Emily started to make up a game while I shopped. She told Dallin and Amanda, "Don't step in the booby trap." Emily was pointing at the red line on the floor. Dallin asked Emily in a smart voice, "Why, what will happen if you step into the booby trap?" Emily quickly responded, "You turn into a booby!"
Dallin was helping Reid in the yard today. Dallin saw that a rake was on the ground sticking up. Dallin says out loud, "Just like in the cartoons" and then proceeds to step on the rake and have it hit him right in the forehead. When I asked him about it later, he told me he meant to caught the rake.
Almost a week ago Emily asked how the babies got in my tummy. I gave her a sweet and short scientific answer that must not have made any sense to her, because she said back to me, "Did you eat them?"
Here is one from Amanda. Reid and I were talking about the ward auction coming up. Reid was telling me all the cool things people were auctioning off, like a weekend at their cabin and a steak dinner. Reid asks me if there is anything we have that we don't need anymore that we could auction off. Amanda perks up and says, "I know, the Dora potty seat!" (About 15 minutes before dinner I came across the potty seat and mentioned to Amanda that we needed to get rid of it)

although we love our mountain home this time of year, we have been missing out on having a lawn to lounge around on. so we finally got an excavator (aka full blown trac hoe) to come out and clear out the side of our lot for some sod, a vegetable garden, and a little zen sanctuary with some wild flowers around the stream.

we went wakeboarding tonight with our neighbors tim and melissa. poor lisa just had to sit in the bumpy boat and watch. but we all had a blast. Dallin got up on his 3rd try!

As an aside, when we were at yellowstone last month, emily saw a boat on the river and said 'wow. a boat. I've never been on a boat'. I asked her a few days ago if she had ever been on a boat and she said 'no', but then corrected herself and said 'actually [her new favorite word], I went on a boat when I was in my mommy's tummy and I was like weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee'.
dumb is an s word
the other night it was just me and emily at home for dinner. she said 'you don't look like a doctor'. I said, 'why, don't I look old enough?'. And she said 'no, and not smart enough'. I countered with 'are you calling me dumb', and then emily said 'dumb is an s word'.

We started out the day at the pool. After a bit of swimming, we had hot dogs and ice cream.
Amanda had been swimming in the shallow end of the pool with Tessa and Emily, but that didn't last long. Amanda felt the peer pressure to learn to swim. She started by putting her face in the water and blowing bubbles (she hates having her face in). Then she decided to go off the diving board and have her Dad caught her. She didn't know it, and neither did anyone else, but as her Dad was helping her swim to the edge, he realized that she could swim! Sure enough, she had practiced enough in her life jacket and she had the perfect doggie paddle going on! Amanda went off the diving board at least 20 more times all by herself! Go Amanda! When you watch the video, notice Amanda's happy face as she swims to the side all by herself.
For the fireworks the kids and hubbies biked to the park after dropping Joelle and I off. They didn't make all the way to the park because Amanda's training wheels were too slow. Amanda had a very long day!

i resisted at first, but the kids won and now we have a brand new $12 walmart pool on our deck. it sure is ugly, but its good for hours of fun in the sun (or shade--- this picture was taken tonight after 8pm)
(jackson is over for a sleepover)
oh, and check out our new fireplace surround. it's not quite done, but we were just excited to finally have something up there. we'll post better pictures of the final product soon
